Part 8: The Cleanup and Exit

  • At this point the Captain, before kneeling down to say his/her prayers, should go and place the sacramentary stand back where it was at the start of mass (in front of and a little to the left of the presiders chair). He/she should then flip the sacramentary open to the first red ribbon and place it on the sacramentary stand along with the mass card.
  • At the same time Server 2, before kneeling down to say his/her prayers, should take the lid of the ciborium from the “dirty” credence table and place it on the corporal.
  • With these 2 tasks complete the Captain and Server 2 should join Server 1 in kneeling in front of their seats and saying their prayers
  • When their prayers are complete each server should return to their seat and take part in singing the communion hymns and not looking to see who they can recognise in the communion line. Server 2, however, should also be keeping an eye on the priest and the Extraordinary Ministers with the communion cups. When the priest or an extraordinary minister with a communion cup begins returning to the altar Server 2 should immediately rise and go to the “clean” credence table. He/she should remove the lid of the cruet of water, pick up the cruet and stand directly in front of the “clean” credence table. This puts Server 2 in a great position to pour water for the Extraordinary Ministers as well as keep an eye on the Priest. Once you have poured water into the empty communion cups of the Extraordinary Ministers, Server 2 can move into position closest to the altar and when Father is ready hand him the cruet of water (handle first). When Father is finished he will hand it back to you and then you can return it to the “clean” credence table, and you can return to your seat
  • Server1 and Server 2 are to wait until father has purified all the vessels and placed them on the right side of the altar. Then in one smooth movement both servers are to rise and carefully remove the chalice and the extra ciboria and place them on the “dirty” credence table. If there is insufficient room there you can use the “clean” credence table.
  • At the conclusion of mass all 3 servers should watch the Priest who will give a head nod to signal that its time to go. You should not leave until you receive a head nod, however, of course if Father were to forget and just start leaving then you would begin to leave as well.
  • Once you receive the nod all 3 servers should go in front of the altar and bow before going to get the candles and processional cross. Servers 1 and Server 2, still walking side by side, follow the Captain down the sanctuary steps and down about 3 pews before they all stop, turn and face the altar. The Priest will bow towards the altar before genuflecting towards the tabernacle. As the Priest begins to rise all 3 servers should carefully turn and begin processing out of the church up the middle aisle.
  • Whichever of the two candle bearers is on the east half of the centre aisle during procession leaving the church is the server who follows immediately behind the captain when we switch from walking side by side to single file when the procession starts to make the turn heading east.
