Part 3: Offertory
- The Captain removes the sacramentary and the mass card from the stand and places them on the left side of the altar. He/she opens the sacramentary to the first black tab plus one more page forward.
- He/she then places the wooden sacramentary stand flush with back of the high altar. Do not set the sacramentary stand merely parallel to the presiders chair but all the way back!
-
Meanwhile, Server 1 grabs the taper and goes in front of the altar to the processional candles. He/she does not have to bow or stop in front of the centre of the altar because he/she carrying the taper. Server 1 then lights the taper and goes and lights the 4 altar candles (lighting the 2 candles on the west side of the altar first and then proceeding in front of the altar to light the 2 candles on the west side of the altar). Server 1 should not go behind the altar to light the four altar candles. He/she then slides the wick down to extinguish the flame (do not blow it out unless you have to) and then slides the newly extinguished wick back up about 3 cm. This is important because if the wick remains inside the taper it is hot and it sticks to the side of the taper and the server at the next mass will not be able to use it. Server 1 is always to use the primary taper and not the smaller back up taper unless the primary taper is stuck.
- Meanwhile, Server 2 gets the 2 communion cups and their purificators and places them on the right side of the altar.
- Server 2 then removes the paten from the chalice and places the paten on the “clean” credence table. He/she then, using 2 hands carries the chalice (which now has the purificator, the pall and the corporal [and possibly a pyx depending on the circumstances] on top) to the altar.
- The Captain sets up the altar by placing the corporal on the centre of the altar and carefully unfolding it. You should never open the corporal without first setting it on the altar and it should never be unfolded as if you were flinging open a napkin. The corporal has 3 rows and 3 columns. The middle column is aligned with the crucifix at the centre of the altar and the bottom of the corporal should be about 4 cm away from the edge of the altar that is closest to where you are standing. This prevents the priest’s long vestments from getting caught on the corporal while he is saying mass
- The pall is placed to the immediate right of the right of the 3rd column and the 3rd row of the corporal.
- The 3 purificators are placed on top of each other directly beneath the pall with the purifacator for the chalice on top.
- The chalice and then the 2 communion cups are placed in order, in an eastern moving line parallel to the 3 purificators and about 8 inches away from the edge of the altar. This should be close enough that it will be easy for the Priest to pour the wine into them later on but not too close that they risk falling of the altar.
- The sacramentary is placed on an angle on the top left hand corner of the corporal and the mass card is placed just below the sacramentary.
